Very informative article, as always. My GP (who has an interset in T2, and admits he had to “study up” on this_ says I’m a probable Mody 3. I continue to refuse the testing that would confirm it, for fear that somehow this inheritable problem will get into my son’s permanent record, and he’ll be refused coverage. the old palaver was “if you don’t do this, that and the other (usually impossible) thing, I’m going to PUNISH you by putting you on insulin.”

No wonder so many people are frightened. No wonder so many people are in denial. My doc went to some kind of seminar about 18 months ago, and came back with a concensus that the medical community had made a big mistake, HUGE, on this one, that most regular T2′s are likely (if they take care of themselves and live long enough) to convert to insulin; T1′s start out that way, and most T1.5 (whether LADA or MODY) ditto.

Giving up pills and starting insulin rebooted my life. This is NOT a punishment. We have an ailment. The fact that we take insulin isn’t because (necessarily) we ignored the ailment, or we did something to deserve it. It’s a part of the natural history of the disease.
